Healthy Habits – improve your goals

It’s an honor to be asked by Dad to be a guest speaker. Living in South Florida just a short drive from Disney World, I’ve been there many times with my family. The trip to Disney is not only fun and exciting, it can be exhausting.

Dad has set a goal to get in shape for his upcoming trip so that he will be able to fully enjoy it. He said he wants to lose 20 pounds in nine months and to be walking 3 miles per day. These are very attainable goals. But sorry, Dad, they are a little lackluster and I think they can be improved.

The magic of Disney lies in the creativity of bringing dreams to life. Every ride at Disney is designed to appeal to your senses. You see bright colors and shapes. You feel the movement of the rides. You listen to the sounds of music and voices. If I mention the ride ‘It’s a Small World’ you can immediately hear the song, see the dancing dolls, feel the movement of the boat ride. The ride comes to life in your mind. Frankly, it’s hard to get rid of either.

A good goal will do the same thing for you. Bring your goals to life by adding the details that appeal to all of your senses. Create your own Disney movie in your mind to motivate you to keep on track with your goals of becoming healthy. In a minute, I’ll show you how to brighten up your goals. You’ll make them so real, they will be like the ‘Small World’ ride that you can’t get out of your head. You won’t be able to stop thinking about it. That’s what you want to happen with your goals. You want your goals to sink deep into your subconscious mind so that you don’t have to make an effort to focus on them anymore.

They become part of you. This is a form of self hypnosis.

You’ve probably seen the classic movie Jungle Book. There is one scene in which Kaa, the giant snake, attempts to hypnotize Mowgli so that he can eat him for dinner. Though Kaa is unsuccessful in his attempt, it is scenes like these that can leave people with a sense of unease about hypnosis. But there is nothing to be afraid of. Self hypnosis is really just a way to hyper focus on your goals. Most people state a few goals and then forget about them right away. This is because the goals don’t have enough life to them. You want them to stick. Here are two steps to make your goals real. 1. Describe your goal using all of your senses. We learn best from stories and Disney is the master of them all. Write a story and create a brightly colored Disney movie (in your mind) starring you. Answering these questions will get you started. What will losing 20 pounds look like? Describe in exact detail what you will be wearing. You’ll probably need some new clothes after losing all that weight. What color and style will they be? What will it sound like? I bet you never thought that losing weight would sound like anything, well it does. People are going to be saying things to you when they see how fantastic you look. What will you hear them saying? Will there be new smells and tastes? You will probably be trying new healthy foods. Describe what you will be experiencing. Last and most important is to describe what it will feel like. Describe how it feels to put your clothes on and they button easily. Maybe they are even a bit loose. I know that feels good! What will it feel like to get out of bed in the morning with an extra burst of energy for the day? 2. Let your goals sink into your mind. Write all of the details down on paper because it gives you a real and tangible goal. If you share them with the world, it helps to make them even more real. Use a bit of self hypnosis to make it sink into your mind. It really is easy to do. Here’s how to do it very simply. Find a quiet moment where you won’t be disturbed, take a few deep breaths and read the story you’ve created. Read it whenever you get the chance. Run the movie through your mind as often as you can. It will sink into your mind and you will naturally begin to act as if it is true. Sit back and enjoy your personal Disney movie in colorful, vivid detail. It’s those details that make you remember and stick to your goals. Sherri Frost is a Certified Hypnotist helping people overcome stress, habits and fear so you can enjoy all life has to offer. Disney Cruise Friday – how to get to Port Caneveral

Dad started out this week, on Sunday, singing the song from Sesame Street which asks. “Can you tell how to get, how to get to Sesame Street?” I thinks that a pretty good premise to end the week on. Yes, just how are we going to get to Port Canaveral and our DISNEY CRUISE on the DISNEY DREAM????

Here is one way to get to Port Canaveral

The bus is one way - Photo by gillfoto

The obvious way is to ride on one of those big blue Disney Cruise Luxury Escorted Motor Coaches. But is that the best way? Let’s take a peak.

Disney Cruise Bus

First lets take a look at the bus. (Disney Cruise Luxury Escorted Motor Coach) Disney has expanded it’s bus service to include a whole fleet of buses dedicated to the Disney Cruise Lines. They are even painted to match the beautiful Disney Cruise ships. A round trip from either the airport or a Walt Disney World hotel is around $70 per person. (Disney Cruise transportation only stops at the Disney Hotels and the airport.) If you are staying offsite you can arrange transportation to and from the airport.

Town Cars

If you want to go in style, you might want to check out a Town Car. Orlando is home to the biggest fleet of Town Cars in the world (except maybe Washington DC, and New York City, and … but there are a bunch of them). You can rent a Town Car for 4 (any Town Car companies that would like to advertise here, make sure to contact Dad) around $225 dollars (tip not included) or so round trip. (Which if you have a family of 4 will save you over $50.) This is really a cool way to get to Port Canaveral. Very upscale with your own driver.

Drive Yourself

As much as Dad likes to drive himself everywhere, this might not be the best option. If you are renting a car, your car ends up sitting in a parking lot for 3, 4, 5 or 7 days. You pay for a car that isn’t being used. Not a good idea. Plus parking at Port Canaveral costs $60, $75, $90 or $120 just to park your car. Parking is in a parking garage. There is preferred parking for $25 per night. It takes about an hour and a half to get from Walt Disney World to Disney’s Cruise Ship Terminal.

Probably the best way for Mrs. Mom and me to get to the Disney Dream and out dream Disney Cruise is to let Disney do the driving. We’ll probably drop off the rental car at the airport and catch the bus there. Or, we might (don’t tell Mrs. Mom I’m even considering this, she’ll kill me) just let Disney do the driving for the whole first week, and maybe for the whole trip. I don’t know if I can pull that off, but we might try it out.

So for now, Dad and Mrs. Mom will be riding one of those beautiful blue buses (did I mention dark blue is Dad’s favorite color) from Walt Disney World to our Disney Cruise.

Tomorrow is Healthy Habits Saturday. Dad has a whole lot of good stuff. Make sure to check back.

Dad’s random thoughts on having a car at Disney World

As I was thinking about todays post for the Perfect WDW Vacation, I had a whole bunch of random thoughts about having a car at Walt Disney World that I just had to share. Here they are in no particular order …

The Parking Lot Symphony

One of our least favorite times of the day is park closing time or right after the fireworks show ends. Why, because it’s time to go home, silly. We hate leaving the parks.

One of the most interesting things about going home time is the Parking Lot Symphony. I’m sure you’ve heard it. It’s that time of night when everyone is looking for where they parked, and hitting the emergency button on their car keys. Sometimes in unison or cadence thousands of cars start honking. It’s a mind blowing experience.

Love the smell of …

Dad has a unique sense of smell. Yep, there are certain things that Dad can smell 100 miles away. One of my favorite smells is the smell of propane burning in the morning. You know, that smell the tram makes as it pulls up to take you to your park of the day. I love that smell.

The Parking Lot at Epcot

Just where did I park? Photo by Joe Shlabotnik

Did you loose something?

On one trip we got into Epcot and it was determined that we left something very important back at the hotel (the Pop Century). We flipped a coin (actually I think I volunteered because the kids were headed for Mission Space and I couldn’t stand that embarrassment again) and Dad ended up heading back to the hotel for whatever it was we left behind. (I think it was something of Dad’s but I can’t remember now.)

We had driven our rental car so being a car loving mid-westerner, I decided I that jumping in the car to go back to the hotel would be faster than waiting for a bus. It really was the right choice, except …

I couldn’t find the car. It wasn’t where I left it. I tried the Parking Lot Symphony button and nothing. I looked high. I looked low. I looked left. I looked right. No, I didn’t make note of the row we parked in. Who does that? I’m a man. I can always find where I parked my car. Somebody must have moved it. I remember we parked right next to the isle. We didn’t walk very far to the tram.

OK, I guess I’ll have to widen the search. Finally after about 30 minutes, I got far enough out and found it. About 100 cars farther out than I thought it was. It seemed like a shorter walk than that.

So I guess the moral of this story is, be very careful to WRITE DOWN the row and section where you park your car. Yes, guys, write it down. If you get on the right row, you’ll find the car eventually. (It might save you some embarrassment.)

Testing one, two, three

One of the things Dad likes to do when traveling is test cars I’m thinking about buying. Like my recent trip to Alaska. I rented a Dodge I dunno what it was (I can’t find a picture of it on anymore). It was a box on wheels. It looked kinda cool, but it wasn’t built for a full-sized human being. Dad is kinda odd shaped, but most big cars fit pretty good. Not this one. It was very uncomfortable in all the wrong places. Won’t be picking one of those ever again.

But it is fun to try out some of the new cars even if they don’t fit.

“We went last year and didn’t have a car,

We don’t need a car at Disney World”. The whole family was going to Walt Disney World. All 15 of us, and Mrs. Mom’s middle sister was pitching a fit (sometimes people just have to pitch a fit). Her family had just been to Disney World and there was no way the whole bunch of us needed a car. The buses were just fine (which shocked all of us coming from her because she’s sometimes the snooty one.)

So we didn’t rent cars at Disney World. This was before Magical Express so we had to find a way to get all 15 of us from the airport to the hotel (the Polynesian). That was fun. (Dad’s first limo ride.)

So, after 8 days at Disney World without a car, what was the verdict? After that trip Mrs. Mom and Dad both vowed never to be without a car at Disney World again. And we were staying in the Polynesian Resort. The best hotel at Disney World for transportation to the parks.

Mrs. Mom’s sister was wrong.

OK, that’s enough. Those are my random thoughts that jumped into my head today about having a car at Disney World.

Go back to Dad’s thoughts about do you need a car at Disney World?

Do you need a car at Disney World?

This is a question I ask myself all the time. For Mrs. Mom and I the answer always has been yes, you do. (Except for the time …) We like the freedom of not being tied to Disney Transportation. Don’t get me wrong, Disney Transportation does a great job and we love riding on the boats and monorail, but we’re not big fans of the buses.

Before we tackle the burning question of the day, I just want to share a few random thoughts about having a car at Disney World. Take a couple of minutes then come back. We’ll wait.

Dad’s random thoughts about a car at Disney World

But the question is not does Dad need a car at Disney World, the question is do you need a car at Disney World? So let’s talk about it some.

You do need a car at Disney World if …

 • You are not staying on-site (meaning the Disney Hotels and the Swan and Dolphin) – those of you that stay in any of the off-site locations even if they say they have a shuttle should probably have a car. For example, Dad stayed in the Embassy Suites in Lake Buena Vista. It had shuttle service to the parks. But as someone once said things aren’t always as they seem. Shuttle service to the parks just might not be very convenient or quick. (Dad’s experience with off-site shuttle service.)
 • You want to venture off Disney property – if you want to leave the confines of the most money sucking place on earth and find a McDonalds or a less expensive restaurant. Or if you want to visit on to the other (sorry Uncle Walt but I have to say it) entertainment sites in the Orlando area, or if you want to do some shopping outside of mouseville, you will probably want a car. (Yes, you can get a taxi but will you save anything?)
 • You are at Walt Disney World during the busy season – if you are visiting during Christmas or the summer or any of the other red, purple or black times on Dad’s Disney World Crowd calendars, you need to consider a car. Even during slow periods you can spend over an hour making a 20 minute trip because you are waiting for a bus (like Dad did).

You might not need a car if …

 • You like riding buses
 • You like waiting in long lines
 • You aren’t going to leave Disney property and are willing to spend all your money on overpriced Disney restaurants
 • You will be staying in a Disney hotel
 • You like standing up when riding a bus

OK, maybe I’m exaggerating a bit. Millions of people each year go to Disney World and don’t have a car and have a perfectly wonderful time. Dad even did it once (but won’t do it again). Let me just say, for this guy that drives an average of 30,000 miles per year, I’m a big fan of being in control (yes, I’m a bit of a control freak). You might be different.

Dad’s Bottom Line

Dad wants to have a car, but that doesn’t mean you have too. Dad also likes the Polynesian and the Pop Century, but they aren’t for everyone. We are all different. Yes, Disney will be glad to drive you around and they even do it pretty efficiently most of the time. You can have a perfectly great time without having a car. It’s up to you.

Driving to Disney World

Yes, there are about a thousand songs rattling around in my head right now, but I won’t bore you with my great singing. (At least not right now.) Today, we’ll talk about driving ourselves to Walt Disney World.

Here's a great car at Disney World

Take a ride in this car - Photo by Samantha Decker

Dad has written a whole lot about driving around Walt Disney World. For years, that was our preferred way to travel, mainly because it was too expensive to fly. What we found is that you can have a great family outing when your driving around the country. We’ve found some great and some not so great places to stop along our way.

Dad knows so much about Driving to Orlando he has a page all about it.

Dad’s Drive to Orlando page

In these days of $3 + per gallon gas, driving doesn’t save as much as it used to, but it’s still a way to save economize for some a lot of us. But, if you like to take road trips Driving to Orlando is a good way to travel.

I know there’s not much here, but if you check out the Drive page it’s all there. Tomorrow, we’ll take a good look at whether or not you need a car at Disney World. Yes, Dad’s written a bunch on that one too, but I’ve got a few new ideas for tomorrow.
