Baby White Rhino Born at Animal Kingdom

Hey Yall! Last week the Animal Kingdom got a new addition just in time for Mother’s Day. Kendi a white rhino who lives in Animal Kingdom gave birth to her fourth child. She had a male calf that is yet to be named. Maybe the powers that be will make it a contest for us regular folks to choose the name.

Kendi was pregnant for 16 months! Wow that is a really long time. Both the mother and calf are doing well and bonding before they debut in the savannah in a few weeks. This is the 9th white rhino born at Animal Kingdom. Kendi was the first one to be born here.

Walt Disney World has partnered with Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Together these two organizations have focused on rebuilding and sustaining the white rhino population in North America. The breeding program at Animal Kingdom has laid the ground work for conservation of the white rhino world wide.

In 2006 Animal Kingdom sent Nande and Hasani two of their born and bred white rhinos to Uganda to help the species. The two of them joined up with 4 others at the Ziwa Sanctuary to rebuild the population. The first calf was a male born in 2009 followed by a female in 2011. These are the first calves born in Uganda since the 1980s. With this offspring the chances of survival for the white rhino increase.

Walt Disney World’s involvement goes far beyond just sending the animals all over the world. The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fun and the Disney Foundation have contributed over $1 million to support education and other programs in Asia and Africa. This money is being used to save the last 5 remaining species of rhinos left on the planet.

I have found some interesting facts about the white rhino as I have been researching this article. Contrary to how it sounds the white rhino is actually gray, it gets it name from an African word “weit” that describes the shape of the mouth. Next to an elephant the white rhino is the 2nd largest animal on the planet. Males can weigh as much a 5,000 pounds. The ears of a white rhino not only hear sounds but also are used as a sense of smell. The white rhino has the widest set of nostrils for a land animal.

Animal Kingdom is very excited about their new addition and hopes that more white rhinos will be born in the future. Walt Disney World is very environmentally conscious and has used the Animal Kingdom as a way to teach the rest of us how to leave at peace with the animals around us. It is has also challenged us to think globally and be mindful of the Earth.

Disney World Ticket Price Increase

Warning. Warning. Walt Disney World Tickets are about to get more expensive. How do I know? It’s happened for like 40 years in a row. Last year, Disney broke with a 10 year tradition and raised prices in June instead of early August.

My guess is in 3 weeks or so, you’ll see an announcement about Disney Ticket Prices and how much they are going to go up. (I’d figure around 3%.)

So, if you are planning a vacation this year and are thinking about buying your tickets, do it now or pay close attention over the next few weeks. If I hear any rumors I’ll be sure to let you know as soon as possible.

You can get tickets from the Authorized Disney Ticket Reseller Dad recommends -

More Changes to Kilimanjaro Safaris

Hey Yall! I have previously written about the removal of Little Red and the poachers on Kilimanjaro Safaris. Well it looks like there will be even more changes. Since they took out the ending, they also had to remove the pre recorded messages that go along with the ride.

But will you return? - Photo by Samantha Decker

For now riders will listen to music and sound effects as they look at all the animals. I personally think this is great and will make the ride more enjoyable. Passengers will be able to just enjoy looking at the animals without having to pay attention to the storyline.

Wilson (the main character) and Dr. Jobson may not be gone forever. They are still featured in the pre-ride film and in the waiting area. I personally hope they do not come back and Animal Kingdom trains the cast members to tell passengers animal names and facts. I think that would make the ride more relaxing and educational.

All of the changes for Kilimanjaro Safaris are set to be done by this fall. They are even testing some lighting to see how the animals interact with it, so that possibly guests can enjoy an evening safari. Riders might get to see some animals that are more rambunctious in the evening or the rest of the animals putting their young ones to sleep. This is set to be a completely different experience from the daytime safaris. So you might want to ride twice. That would be pretty cool.

Over the next 3 to 4 years, Imagineers are working on building larger savannahs. They have removed all the plants that would be hazardous to the zebras they have put into place. There are also lots of grassy areas for the zebras to graze. Walls have been put up the area where they are taking out Little Red.

It would not be that surprising to see Animal Kingdom continue to grow. Walt Disney World owns lots of land around it. I am sure it will just keep expanding and changing. I have even heard a rumor that there might be an AVATAR-land. Another big surprise might be that the park stays open later in the evenings. Right now the park closes at basically sunset. Most other parks are open late and attract guests to spend the entire day there.

That is all I have for now about the upgrades in Animal Kingdom. Check back throughout the week for all the Walt Disney World news. Comment below on changes you would like to see made to Animal Kingdom and what you think about these changes.

Mrs. Mom’s Pearls of Wisdom

Mrs. Mom is special. (She’d have to be to stay around me all the time.) Since this is Mom’s Day, I thought it would only be fitting to celebrate Mrs. Mom and share some of the “Pearls of Wisdom” that she shares with me every day.

This is gonna be good …

Mrs. Mom hasn’t always been excited about our Dad’s Walt Disney World vacation obsession. But through the years, I’ve converted her. (It took a cold and rainy week in Branson to finally cure her.)

One thing you have to know about Mrs. Mom is she is a creature of habit. New and different makes Mrs. Mom uncomfortable. So when I started talking about what I wanted to accomplish during what we now call Dad and Mrs. Mom’s Disney Palooza 2012, Mrs. Mom sometimes balked. She actually started calling the trip the New and Different vacation because we were doing so many new and different things from our previous trips. For example we are trying 13 new restaurants on the Palooza. New and Different.

Mrs. Mom’s Pearls -

Dad is the creative one in the family, Mrs. Mom is the practical one, which works pretty well (at least when Dad will listen to Mrs. Mom). Being the practical one, Mom is full of practical pearls that keep us on track. Here are some of her favorite pearls of wisdom.

  • Bring 2 pairs of shoes – yes, Mrs. Mom brings 2 identical pairs of tennis shoes (no she isn’t a shoe hound) on our Disney World vacations. They came in real handy the time it rained for 40 days and 40 nights (it was really only 3 days) while we were at Walt Disney World. She was the only one in the family that had dry feet for almost a week.
  • Fresh socks in the afternoon – Mrs. Mom is big on keeping feet happy. Happy feet are the base of a happy trip. Our backpack will have a fresh pair of socks (or we will go back to the hotel and change)  to freshen up our feet in the afternoons.
  • Traditions – Mrs. Mom is big on traditions. Some of our traditions include, eating at ‘Ohana, Casey’s Corner, Teppan Edo and lots of others. Traditions are a good thing. It’s sometimes a difficult thing when traditions get changed. For example, one of our traditions was getting a pineapple for dessert at ‘Ohana. A few years ago, Disney added the Banana Bread Pudding with ice cream and carmel rum sauce. We were leery, in fact we asked for just pineapple but were talked in to trying the other. Needless to say a new tradition has begun.
  • Brush your teeth – like I said, Mrs. Mom is practical. We will carry travel toothbrushes and toothpaste into the parks and brush out teeth after meals.

Mrs. Mom’s Questions -

Whenever Dad starts talking Disney, Mrs. Mom sometimes has some questions. Every trip she has lots of questions. Sometimes these questions are meant to make me think about some silly idea I have, but usually she just wants to know something. Here are some of the questions Mrs. Mom has had for the Palooza.

Mrs. Mom’s Fanny Pack

What’s in Mom’s Fanny Pack? Mrs. Mom carries a Magical Fanny Pack with all kinds of stuff that might come in handy during the day. (Dad carries the backpack that has mundane things like cameras and stuff.)  Her Fanny Pack is really cool. If we need something, we just ask Mom and out of the Magic Fanny Pack it pops. Here is what’s it -

  • Medicines including Tylenol
  • Bandaid’s and blister remedies
  • Tickets – Mrs. Mom is the keeper of the tickets including FASTPASSes
  • Blistex
  • Sunglasses/string – when the sun goes down the Fanny Pack holds sunglasses and glasses strings
  • Breath mints
  • Anything else we might need (it’s magic, whatever we need is always in there)

Mrs. Mom is special. She is practical. She takes care of us. Whenever we need something she is there and she has what we need. She’s amazing.

Happy Mothers Day

Dad is struggling with finding something special to talk about for Disney Cruise Friday (a bit of writers block). So, today (as it should be) is all about Mothers. I took a trip over and visited my Mom this week, and Mom is on my mind.

Dad’s Mom was a Disney nut just like her mother. (Sound familiar?) For Dad it’s genetic. I think I went to Disneyland before I could walk. Some of my oldest memories are of spending time at the original Disney park (yelling at my sister to stop spinning the stupid Tea Cup.) That’s all because of Mom (and Grandma.) Thank you Mom!

This weekend in America, we celebrate our Mothers. That’s quite appropriate. I hope each of you will do something special to honor your mothers this weekend.

Dad will have a special celebration on Sunday when Mrs. Mom comes to the blog to share her tips, thoughts, plans and more about the Palooza. This will be something you don’t want to miss.

Happy Mothers Day!
