Big Silver Ball

Mrs. Mom is not a, shall we say, less than fully intelligent person of  flaxen colored hair. She’s usually very intelligent. Even Mrs. Mom has her moments.

In Mrs. Mom’s defense, it had been a long day and we were coming to the end of it …

We finally made it all the way around the World Showcase and walked into the Canada Pavilion. We trudged down the hill to the dungeon that houses the movie O Canada.

(Personally I hate the nine eyes movies in Epcot.  They make me sick, but I’m a bit of a wimp.)

At the end of the movie Martin Short says something like come visit us in Canada, just go to the big silver ball and turn left.

We started walking out of the movie and Mrs. Mom suddenly made a right turn. (THE PLAN called for a left turn.) After a couple of minutes of following Mrs. Mom around, we asked her where she was going.

I’m looking for the big silver ball, Mrs. Mom said.

I’d love to say the Dad and the kids lovingly, quietly told Mrs. Mom that Mr. Short was talking about Spaceship Earth, but no … we hooted and shouted and laughed in her face.

What can I say, that’s how we roll.

Welcome to Dad’s recommendations for the FAA ITSISS Convention at Walt Disney World. Being a fellow FAA employee, I’m just a little jealous about not getting an invitation to join you in Mickeyland. It’s OK. I’ll forgive you this time. Just don’t let it happen again.

Here’s what I’d suggest for some cheap (hey, your FAA employees, per diem in Orlando is fairly low) things to do during the week.

Wishes

Watch Wishes (the Magic Kingdom fireworks show) from the Polynesian beach. The Polynesian is Dad’s favorite resort to watch Wishes from.  If you go just behind the Volcano pool, you’ll see Wishes just like you would if you were watching from Main Street.

Dad’s Disney Wishes page

Here’s how you get to the Polynesian from the Dolphin. Grab the bus to the Magic Kingdom. Once you get there, walk around for a couple of minutes and drool over the just being there. (Hey, that’s what Dad does.)  To get to the Polynesian, take the launch, the monorail or ride the ferry (to the Transportation and Ticket Center then find the path to the Polynesian). Around 8:30, walk out to the beach just behind the Volcano pool and grab a lawn chair. Settle down and watch Wishes. After Wishes, take the monorail back to the Magic Kingdom where you can catch a bus back to the Dolphin.

The Boardwalk

If you like to people watch, walk out onto the Boardwalk and grab a seat. (The Pizza Window has good pizza.) You can even take a ride on a bike down the boardwalk.

Downtown Disney

There is a lot to see and do at Downtown Disney. There is lots of shopping, and things to see. Make sure to check out LegoLand (no telling how much longer it will be there) and walk through the DISNEY STORE THINGY.

Check out the Resorts

It’s fun just to walk through each of the resorts. Each one is very different. Some are beautiful on the outside and inside, like the Grand Floridian. Some are just different, like The Contemporary, but each has a charm.

Disney World Hotels

Getting around Disney World is more than just buses and monorails. It’s fun to try out the boats between The Dolphin and Disney’s Hollywood Studios or Epcot. It’s neat to ride across Seven Seas Lagoon on the ferry’s or on the launches that go from the Magic Kingdom area hotels to the Magic Kingdom.

The best ride at Disney World outside of the parks is the monorail. Both The Magic Kingdom loop and the Epcot Loop are fun to just ride around and around and around.

So off Dad went. Planning a Christmastime trip to Disney World. Timing was perfect. We were going to arrive the day of the last Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party and then the next day we could celebrate the birthday in Epcot. Perfect.

Dad got into planning mode. I called Disney Dining and got a dinner reservation at L’Originale Alfredo di Roma Ristorante for the perfect time. All was right with the world. Everything fell into place. Flights, hotels (Caribbean Beach Resort), meals, MVMCP it was all perfect, until we arrived … (See what can happen to even the best laid plans.)

Finally time came, we presented ourselves at the podium of http://dads-blog.dadsguidetowdw.com/disney-world-how-weather-can-effect-your-trip/. We went inside and took the table. (We had this planned in advance.) Mrs. Mom took The Princess to the restroom. I called the waiter over and told them it was the Princesses birthday. We don’t usually like to do this, but I was doing research to see what happened. (That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.)

In a few minutes, after the ladies returned, the musicians strolled over and started singing to The Princess. She blushed (it was so perfect). They sang about 3 songs then sang Happy Birthday. The Princess was totally embarrassed.

When the meal ended the waiter brought out a special cake just for The Princess. She didn’t share.

By the way the Alfredo at L’Originale Alfredo di Roma Ristorante was outstanding.

I miss that place.

The Rotunda

I must confess, I have a secret lust, a hidden, clandestine, disguised, private, undisclosed hunger for …

My dream in life is to be part of the Voices of Liberty. I have been saying sing with them, but I can do that (and frequently do) anytime I visit The American Adventure.

It all started on our second visit to Walt Disney World. It was the summer of 1986. We ditched The Princess with the grandparents and flew off to Disney World. It was our first visit to Epcot.

By the time we got back to The American Adventure, I was pretty bored. (Yes, I bore easily.) I needed a something to wake me up. When we started to walk into the building, I stopped. Hey, I said, this looks like another boring patriotic movie. I don’t think I can stand another boring movie. (Especially one of those surround movies, they make my head spin.)

Mrs. Mom insisted (she loves historical things). She said something about a singing group so I reluctantly went along. After a few minutes, a group of people came out. The were dressed in old time clothes. I was ready to bolt. I wasn’t going to sit through some boring history lecture before some boring movie.

Then it happened …

They started singing …

It was love at first note. Yes, my dream began that day. From that time, every time we visit, it gets worse. The Candlelight Processional really brings it out. I can’t wait until the day that I get to put on one of those old time costumes and sing with the Voices of Liberty.

I’d die happy. So some day if I disappear from the face of the earth, and you happen to visit the American Adventure and see an slightly overweight old man, smiling from ear to ear, belting out a beautiful tenor, stop by and say hello. It will probably be me.

The Stave church in Norway

Dad’s just put the finishing touches on his Epcot Norway Pavilion pages. Norway is the newest pavilion in Epcot. It debuted 6 years after the park first opened.

Norway has one ride. Maelstrom is the fastest ride in the World Showcase. (That’s not saying much. There are only 2 rides in the World Showcase and the other is next door in Mexico and is a slow river ride.) Maelstrom is a river ride with a 14 foot drop that can be disconcerting but is not all that scary.

Akershus Royal Banquet Hall hosts the Princess Storybook Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner. All the Princesses in your life should try it out. Come on Dad’s. You little Princess, and her mother, will love you forever.

Drop by Kringla Bakeri og Kafe for some Norwegian pastries or sandwiches. It’s a great place for a quick bite. It’s even fairly inexpensive, for Disney World.

Norway is a beautiful area of Disney World. Check it out.
