Howdy folks! In continuing with our holiday theme this month on Foodie Friday, today we’re going a little bit outside the box… and into the jar! We’ll be exploring a Christmas tradition that comes to life throughout the year at WDW in the form of an ever so tasty snack, side, or garnish…
Why pickles? Well, pickles have a bit of an association with Christmas. Germans and Americans have a tradition of hanging a pickle shaped ornament in the Christmas tree – the first one to find is is rewarded with a prize or the promise of a good year of fortune ahead! That makes them the perfect candidate for a tasty treat this Foodie Friday!
The best and most prevalent pickle you’ll find at WDW is the giant pickle. Typically costing $1.25-2.00, these are larger than your average pickle – 4-6” in length and 1.5-2” in diameter. They are individually wrapped and store on ice or in refrigerated compartments, resulting in a perfect, cool, crisp, crunchy, flavorful dill pickle!
And they make a refreshing, low calorie snack on a hot Florida day! Find them at hotel Quick Service locations, and fresh fruit kiosks in Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, and Disney’s Hollywood Studios.
Fried pickles can be found on property too. I just adore the fried pickle appetizer at Sci Fi Dine In Theatre – cornmeal crusted coins and battered spears served with a spicy ranch dip so good you’ll be asking for more to go with the rest of your meal! The Rose and Crown has also been known to serve a deep fried pickle spear alongside their burgers in the past!
Pickles can be found on the side of sandwiches and burgers at several Table Service restaurants, and are available at build-your-own burger stations or on toppings bars at Quick Service Locations too!
The traditional pickle Christmas ornaments are available in Epcot’s Germany pavilion year-round. With the increase in popularity around food-themed merchandise (Dole Whip ceramics, Turkey Leg tee-shirts, Mickey Bar magnets) I’d love to see the giant pickle make the ranks – with an air freshener, perhaps? (No? Is that just me?)
What’s your favorite pickle in WDW?
