Maharajah Jungle Trek

I recently had the opportunity to experience The Maharajah Jungle Trek in Asia at Disney’s Animal Kingdom.  I have to admit, I sometimes skip it to experience some of the more popular attractions in this park.  I forgot just how magnificent and exotic this area is and won’t be missing it again.

Since the trek is a self-guided tour, you can take your time as you start your journey in the land of Anandapur. Not only will you see exotic wildlife native to Asia, such as Gibbons, Fruit Bats, the elusive Asian Tigers, Blackbuck Antilope, Malayan Flying Fox, just to name a few, but take the time to observe the architecture and art of the ancient ruins especially in the Tiger Forest section.

If you time your visit either early in the morning, or later in the day, you will have a better chance at viewing the tigers and possibly getting some good pictures of them as they frolic and play in their pond. If you are really lucky, they will be up against the glass viewing window, literally a few feet in front of you.

Your journey on the trek ends with an aviary flocking with over 50 species of  colorful birds swooping down and flying above you.  There is a large net high above the trees,  if you look closely, so they cannot fly out of the enclosure. Be sure to pick up a bird guide so that you can identify the different types you see. Most people look up but be sure to look in the grasses as you never know what might be walking around you on the ground!

Every step along the path is beautiful and scenic.  The Florida sun peeks through the swaying trees and grasses, all native to Asia. I found this area to be a quiet respite from the hustle bustle of Harambe.

Be sure to take advantage of the knowledge of the guides situated along the path, many of them native to Asia;  you will learn about the conservation efforts in place to save these beautiful and exotic creatures.  They also have insider information of the animal’s  various hiding places to point out to you.

The Maharajah Jungle Trek is wheelchair/ECV friendly, as the paths are flat and wide.

The trek is a perfect example that the Animal Kingdom has much more to offer than carnival rides and themed shows.  It is up to you to seek out and take time to journey through the paths of exotic lands that The Maharajah Jungle Trek has to offer at Disney’s Animal Kingdom!
