Dear friends,
Now that you’ve had a little time to digest my suggestions on hotels and meals, let’s start making a plan. This is the fun part of the trip. I know, you aren’t used to planning your trip to the parks, and you might not think it’s necessary for a Disney World trip, but let me assure you, it is. It’s essential, especially for the first trip, to have a PLAN.
Arrival day – Monday – let’s assume (since you are driving) that you’ll arrive at your hotel at around 3pm. It’s kinda silly to spend a whole day’s worth of tickets for less than half a day, but not to worry, there’s plenty to do without going to the parks.
First go to the hotel, check-in (you’ll get your tickets when you check-in), settle in to your room. The kids might want to go swimming. This is a great time for that. Around 5ish, drive (yes drive) over to Downtown Disney and grab some dinner and look around. Downtown Disney is huge. There are a whole bunch of restaurants here. You might stop in to Disney Quest. It’s a guy’s paradise. It’s a 5 story arcade. Yep, 5 story arcade.
At around 8:00, drive to the Polynesian Resort (if you aren’t staying there, and even if you are), grab a soda and go to the beach. Grab a beach chair and set up camp behind the volcano. Make sure you can see the castle in the Magic Kingdom. At 9pm Wishes (the fireworks show at the Magic Kingdom) will start. It’s a great show. After the show go back to your hotel and get some sleep. Tomorrow will be a long day.
Day 1 – Tuesday
Tuesday is a great day to start in the Magic Kingdom. Every Disney World vacation should start in the Magic Kingdom. This is an Extra Magic Hour day, so you need to be at the park gate no later than 7:40 am. (Yes, kids, that’s right 7:40 in the morning eastern daylight time, come on, get up, it’s a Disney World vacation, not some “other” theme park vacation.)
As soon as you get admitted walk quickly to Space Mountain. The quickest way is to take a right just past the Main Street Bakery (no stopping unless they have a rope up and aren’t letting you into the park). Ride Space Mountain. After Space Mountain, go directly to Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin and ride. You might want to ride them a second time if the lines aren’t too long. Next walk around the corner to Monsters Inc. and see the show. If you decide to ride Stitch’s Great Escape, this will be a good time.
Time to leave Tomorrowland (you’ll come back and finish later in the week).
That’s enough for tonight, tomorrow we’ll finish day one.
