Healthy Habits Saturday – Plan Ahead

He’s back. The Healthy Dad is back. (Sometimes the Healthy Dad is hard to find. It’s a bit unnatural for Dad to be talking healthy.) So, just where did we leave off so long ago when we were talking about Healthy Habits on Saturday? Let’s see …

Cinderella Castle

How can this be stressful? - Photo by Express Monorail

I think we were talking about Dad’s 10 steps to a Stress Free Vacation. If I remember right, we were ready for the step about Planning. I’m a bit excited about this one because … because, I’m a big planner when it comes to Walt Disney World vacations.

Now I know that some of you are ready to turn off your computer or are shouting … “I’m on vacation, I don’t want to have to stick to a PLAN. Yuck. Why can’t we just get up whenever we want and go to whatever park that fits our mood, eat when and where we want, park hop, and just do what we want? Come on Dad guy, what’s wrong with that?

Let me just say, if you don’t mind waiting hours in lines, if you always want to eat hamburgers and hot dogs, if you want to take a chance at missing the best things Walt Disney World has to offer, then go ahead. Don’t plan. Just go and have a marvelous time. It will be OK. (I’m not even going to throw in the condescending “Don’t come spewing about how your trip was horrible whenever you get home.” I wouldn’t stoop that low.)

So, Dad why is it important to have a plan?

Good, you’re coming to your senses. Here’s why it’s so important to have a plan. Walt Disney World is unlike any other vacation destination in the world. Over 15 million people visit Walt Disney World every year. On an average day the Magic Kingdom has around 50,000 guests. The other parks are between 30,000 and 45,000 per day. EVERY DAY. At 11 am almost every day there is an hour long line for at least one ride in every park.

The average visitor to the Magic Kingdom (Disney’s statistics) visits 9 attractions. NINE. Less than 10. There are about 40 attractions in the Magic Kingdom which means the average guest sees one quarter of the park. And that doesn’t even count some of the magical extras that are all around..

Another reason it’s vital to have at least an outline of a plan is to make Dining Reservations. I know I discussed Advanced Dining Reservations for a couple of weeks but it’s a great part of a Walt Disney World vacation. We’ve seen lots of times when we are waiting to be seated that guest come up and ask how long the wait is for a table only to be told there won’t be any available. It happens all the time at almost all of the Table Service restaurants. There are several where you absolutely won’t get in without an Advanced Dining Reservation. It would be a shame to miss some of the great restaurants at Disney World just because you don’t want to have a plan.

The healthy thing about planning is it takes away stress. When you make a plan before you leave and everyone knows what the plan is, you don’t have the bickering that happens when Bobbie want to go swimming while Jenny wants to ride Dumbo. This is true of any vacation. It’s important that everyone knows what is expected every day. What time will the alarm go off tomorrow? Are we going shopping or fishing? When was that tee time?

Dad thinks planning is essential. So much so that I’m going to spend at least this whole week talking about it. On Monday, Dad will be touting his and Mrs. Mom’s Magic Kingdom plan for the Palooza and as the week goes on we’ll talk about the other parks.

Next Saturday, we’ll talk about working on a plan as a family. You won’t want to miss that (or anything else Dad writes.) Have a good week.

PS. Dad’s Healthy Habits Support Group is still going. Come on over and join us.

My Favorite Ride at Animal Kingdom

Hey Yall! Sorry this is late, but I had some unforeseen circumstances that kept me from writing Thursday, and well, let’s just say the rest is all Dad’s fault.

The sign for Expedition Everest

My favorite ride - Photo by Don Sullivan

My favorite ride at Animal Kingdom in Expedition Everest. In close 2nd is Kilimanjaro Safari. When Prince Charming and I went in September we got to ride Everest about 5 times because the lines were so short. This was before we had gotten our magical go straight to the front of the line tickets.

This attraction opened on April 7th, 2006. It was the first roller coaster in Animal Kingdom. Before this Animal Kingdom was kinda boring for those of us who enjoy thrill rides. Lots of shows and places to see animals, but no real zing. The Man-Child has always loved all the animals. So Animal Kingdom is his fav but he was even more excited when they added a roller coaster.

Expedition Everest is in the Asia section of Animal Kingdom. Other great parts in Asia are the Flights of Wonder show, Kali River Rapids to cool off after a long hot day in the park, and the Maharajah Jungle Trek where you walk through an animal enclosure. Guests can grab something to eat at Yak’n'Yetti.

Disney has out done themselves with the theme of this ride. Guest are put into trains to up to the top of Mount Everest. The mount is covered in blue and white paint to simulate the cold environment of Everest. The pre show takes your through the offices of “The Himalayan Escapes Tour Company”. As you walk through there is some information about animals you might encounter along the way. Signs point the way to Anadapur Rail Service where you board your train to the top of Everest.

The train takes guest towards the top of the mountain. Signs along the way point of the danger of the Yeti. As guests get to the top of the mountain there is tangled track. The lights go out and the Yeti appears. People scream fearing for their lives. Just when you think the ride is over, wham you are sent down the track backwards. I remember Mrs. Mom screaming at Dad to get her off this ride the first time we rode it.

Of course there is nice gift shop after the ride, where you can buy your picture and other great gifts that are Yeti inspired. My suggestion is to ride this ride and then ride the Kali River Rapids and then grab something to eat at Yak’n'Yeti. If there is a long wait I do suggest getting a FastPass but you will really be missing an awesome pre show. Tell me your thoughts on Expedition Everest.

Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party Dates

Hey yall! I have more exciting news today. Walt Disney World has released the dates for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. The event is held in the Magic Kingdom and like the Halloween Party you must purchase a ticket separately.

Trust me this is something you are not going to want to miss if you are at Walt Disney World during November and December. Our whole family has been and it is a great way to make memories and ride your favorites rides as many times as you want.

The opening day for this event is Friday November 9th. The following week the party will happen on Monday the 12th, Wednesday the 14th and Friday the 16th. There will be a break the week of Thanksgiving so that guests can concentrate on that holiday. There are some really great places to eat Thanksgiving dinner at Walt Disney World.

Never fear during the last week of November the Magic Kingdom will host parties again. The first will be Sunday the 25th and then Tuesday the 27th, Thursday the 29th and Friday November 30th. If at all possible I would suggest going on your trip as early as possible in November. Things really start to get crazy at Thanksgiving and then reach a peak at Christmas.

As Christmas gets closer the amount of Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party increases. WHOOO! The first week of December kicks off with a party on Sunday December 2nd, then Tuesday the 4th, Thursday the 6th, and Friday the 7th. The second week parties will be on Sunday the 9th, Tuesday the 11th, Thursday the 13th and Friday the 14th. The last week of parties will be the third week of December. Guest can enjoy the festivities on Sunday the 16th, Tuesday the 18th (My Birthday), Thursday the 20th, and Friday the 21st.

With this event the Magic Kingdom shuts its gates at 7 pm to all guests who have not purchased a ticket Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. Those who have their tickets will get to stay in the park and roam until Midnight. You will definitely have a chance to ride all of your favorites more than once. Lines typically are very short. Cookies and Cocoa are great snacks to eat as you enjoy the evening.

In addition to riding your favorite rides there will be plenty of photo opportunities. Mrs. Mom still has a picture on the refrigerator with all of us soaked to the bone from rain smiling and having a good time at the party. Many of the character will be available for photos. They are dressed up in their Christmas attire and it is a really great chance for your kids to see their favorites.

Let Dad’s friends over at Pixie and Pirate Destinations help you plan your trip and get your tickets for you. Like I said before this is an event you will not want to miss. So many great things happen at the Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party. It will be a chance to make wonderful memories with the family.

Dad and Mrs. Mom’s Disney Palooza 2012 – The Plan – Day 2

Can someone please get Dad a longer title for this vacation? (The title is almost as long as the Palooza itself.)

Yesterday, we talked about Travel Day for the Palooza. Whoopee. Traveling to Orlando, my favorite thing.

Today, we are going to look at our first actual day in a park. (We are planning 10 days in the parks during the Palooza.)

Sunday, October 7, 2012

Sunday for us is church day. Normally we would spend most of our day at church and spending time with our church friends. That’s what we do. If Dad breaks down and splurges for a car at Disney World, we will drive to a local church and start our day at church. If not we will have a short service together and then …

  • Get everything packed up. Go to get our omelets at Everything Pop. Go back to the room and brush teeth then grab everything and take the bags to Bell Services for transfer over to our Bay Lake Towers room.
  • After breakfast, Dad will take Mrs. Mom by the hand and we’ll jump on the bus (Escorted Motor Coach) to the Magic Kingdom. Why the Magic Kingdom? Sunday morning is a great time to visit the Magic KIngdom. Sunday morning crowds are usually the lowest of the week.
  • At the Magic Kingdom, Dad and Mrs. Mom are going to take Dad’s Nine by Noon Challenge (details to come). We’ll start out in Tomorrowland and work our way around the park riding Buzz Lightyear about 10 times.
  • Eat lunch at the nearest quick service restaurant (unless the new Be Our Guest restaurant is open if so, we’ll try the lunch there) at lunch time.
  • Late in the afternoon, we’ll take the monorail (Dad’s favorite ride) over to the Contemporary Resort and check in to our Bay Lake Towers room. Yes, it is a Magic Kingdom view room, thank you very much.
  • We have a 6 something pm reservation at Liberty Tree Tavern where Dad is going to celebrate Thanksgiving about 6 weeks early. After that we’ll probably finish any rides we missed earlier.
  • We will watch the Main Street Electrical Parade then we might run back to the hotel and watch Wishes from our room. (Since we are spending the big bucks for the Magic Kingdom view.)
  • The Magic Kingdom is open until midnight, but we have an early morning on Monday so we’ll probably get to bed pretty early. (We’re boring old people.)

See a more detailed of Dad’s Day 2 plan at Dad’s Magic Kingdom Plan page

Day 2 down 15 or so to go.
